This week the Planet Mechanics are off to the home of the Fab Four - Liverpool ! They've been invited by Professor Kronenburg, Head of Architecture at Liverpool University. He wants to do something about Liverpool - and Britain's - affordable housing crisis. He invites Dick and Jem - the Planet Mechanics - to help turn cheap and plentiful shipping containers into the economical and sustainable homes of the future. In just 6 days, Dick, Jem and 6 architecture students transform 3 x 20 foot metal containers into a habitable home - for just £12,000. The heat and hot water comes from a wood burning stove and thermal store, power for the ultra-efficient LED lights comes from solar panels - and electricity for a house computer comes from an old gym exercise bike ! The Planet Mechanic's can-do approach and eco expertise combined with Professor Kronenburg's design input - proves that a solution to a major social and practical problem is within our grasp.
