Millions of visitors have seen the bubbling mud pots and clockwork geysers, but beyond the boardwalk, there’s a wilderness few have experienced. The name “Yellowstone” may have a backyard familiarity, but the park itself holds much more than what most see. The “back country” makes up most of Yellowstone’s two million acres. It’s a giant swatch of terrain - much of it remote, some of it dangerous, all of it commanding awe and respect. Here wolves, bison and bears roam freely and new waterfalls wait to be discovered. But there is also danger under foot. Yellowstone is an ever-changing geological cauldron of magma, fumaroles, boiling hot springs and poisonous gases.
